This isn’t so much an accusation as it is a question before our nation.
A house divided against itself cannot stand.” I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved — I do not expect the house to fall — but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new — North as well as South ~ Lincoln
There is a little known case winding its way through the various mechanisms of our judicial system. There is a man who has had his academic future, and the future of his family put on hold while he defends baseless charges and accusations against him. He, along with the rest of the class, was asked , as part of a discussion on culture and medicine, to self identify themselves. When it was his turn he identified himself as African–American. That’s when the trouble started for him. You see, this man is Caucasian, a white guy. In our politically correct world, this will not stand and after many admonitions and educational sanctions placed against him , his career and dreams are in jeopardy of being destroyed. How can he call himself an African-American they cried? he’s a white guy. Here is a link to the story
The story goes on to explain that this man comes from a family that emigrated to Mozambique three generations ago. They are Portuguese by heritage, but Africans by birth and culture. He is African, from the country of Mozambique, and his family has lived there for three generations as citizens of Mozambique. Yep, he’s an African, no doubt about it. He emigrated here and jumped through all the hoops and is now a citizen of this country, that makes him an American. Put the two together, he’s an African-American according to the true meanings of these words, but we don’t use these words with their true meanings now do we?. The outcry over this just proves that these words are meaningless and the result of identity politics and the scourge called politically correct dogma. This man’s medical career, and by extension the financial well-being of his family are being put at risk for the idiotic notion that we are all “hyphenated” Americans instead of just…..Americans.
When did our melting pot melt? Isn’t that how our nation has always been portrayed? It didn’t matter who you were, or where you came from, if you came to America and joined our family you were one of us. That used to mean something to people, to ourselves. No one said you had to renounce your culture to be an American, far from it. The various cultures introduced to our society by the various groups that have come here over the years have just added to the rich spice that is the flavor of our soup. That’s what the Melting Pot metaphor is all about.
Of course you were proud of your heritage, but that wasn’t why you came here. People came here to get away from whatever problems faced them in their home countries. They came here to start over, they were no longer Germans, or Irish, or Italians or Chinese, they were Americans. Luckily for us, they never forgot where they came from, otherwise many of us would never have experienced good Chinese food, or a fine German Beer, we wouldn’t have known many of the inventions we take for granted today. Many of the Americans that invented this or that item or technology in the 19th and 20th Centuries, were first generation immigrants to our country. They didn’t invent these things in the name of their home country, or to aggrandize their culture, they did it to better the lives of Americans…and I’m sure to make a buck or two also. But the fact remains, if it hadn’t been for who we are, these people might never have come here, and almost certainly wouldn’t have had the opportunities in their home countries that our country afforded them…otherwise, they’d never have left in the first place.
Today. What do we have today? Everyone is a “something”-American. Everything in our society revolves around gaining favor with, or distancing ones self from this or that hyphenated group. All this does is play one group against another and further balkanizes our society. It’s all but gotten to the point where people identify themselves first as a such and such American instead of just…an American. This is a direct result of decades of leftist dogma being taught in our schools through the omission of certain facts, and the outright distortion of others in regards to our history. Hey, let’s face it, we’re not perfect and have done some pretty fucked up things in the past. But through it all, we still strove for perfection and the dream that is America lived on. We’ve paid penance or at least have done our best to do so for our past sins. We’ve learned from our mistakes and have done our best to correct them. When the bad and good of us and our history are put on a balance scale, the good far outweighs the bad. And at the very least, we should learn about the truth of our history, covering up the bad parts so as not to “offend” some group does everyone a disservice.
The other factor, which is frankly an offshoot of leftist dogma itself, is the concept of political correctness. Political correctness states that it isn’t right to judge other cultures against our own. Who are we to judge, is the essence of PC dogma. We can’t say this culture is bad because who are we to judge, we’ve done bad things too. You can’t say this or that because , “it’s just their way” No method is better or worse, no culture is better or worse than another, and so on. Everything is just different sides of the same coin. Well, to any rational person, this concept is complete and utter crap, yet it has become the norm in our society today. Nowhere in the Constitution does it state you have an inalienable right to not be offended. There is such as thing as right and wrong, there are good people and bad people. Not all cultures are conducive to such noble and obvious concepts like, oh let’s just say, Women’s Rights?? Political correctness is a cancer on our society and if we don’t get into a serious chemotherapy program soon, it’s going to kill us.
We need to stop looking at ourselves as different kinds of Americans, we’re Americans , of course we’re different. There is no American race. This man that is on the verge of having his dream destroyed needs to know that there are still people left in this country that know what it means to be an American. Whether by design or fate, this man’s case highlights the folly of political correctness and hyphenated Americans.
We have become a house divided. History says that’s not a good thing, Lincoln just reminded us of it.
So, what kind of American are you? In PCspeak I’m an Italian/German/Irish-American. In reality I’m just….
