There is nothing in the Constitution, nor any of the writings of our founding fathers or government documents that ever spoke to the inalienable right to NOT be offended. Free Speech MEANS something, it’s not just a catchy phrase, suitable for framing. It means that we as Americans, human beings if you really want to get technical, have an inalienable right , well wait, I can’t say it as well as our founding fathers said it, so here is the text of the FIRST ( ever wonder why it was the FIRST Amendment? ) Amendment
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Don’t see anything in there that says you have a right to never be offended by something someone says. You have as much right to speak your mind as does the person you disagree with. If you don’t like what someone has to say, you don’t HAVE to listen to them. Likewise , they don’t have to listen to what you say if they don’t like it. But both sides are supposed to understand that each side is within their rights to speak their minds. Apparently, now, many of us have forgotten this simple concept. Our founding fathers did a damn good job, despite their flowery language, to spell out what they meant by each and every one of the amendments. Read some of their writings on the various issues they grappled with while putting it together. They freely explain WHAT they meant by this or that phrase that ended up in the Constitution. People now like to say that the Constitution is a “living document” or “Over 100 years old and not important”, or “too confusing to know what they really meant”..in regards to the 2nd.
If the Constitution was still a required course in High Schools and Jr. Highs, kids would learn the meanings behind the amendments. There wouldn’t be so much confusion among the masses. However, this isn’t the case. Whether through design, or yet another unintended consequence of the left. These courses are hardly taught , if at all in our public schools. It’s a wonder people still know we have a constitution, let alone understand the words written down upon it.
I’m tired of people who are professionally offended these days. Get over yourselves, you’re no more or less important in life than I am. Free Speech means Free Speech. Trust me, most of what comes out of leftists is extremely offensive to me, but I’d be the last person on this planet to insist they shouldn’t be allowed to say what they want. And I’m one of those “evil” conservatives, so I should be all like pro Nazi and stuff right? How were they with free speech? Weird, they acted a lot like…..leftists
